E-MAILS TO IRELAND

This year we have started a new activity in the English Language Department. It consists on sharing letters with one Irish school. We consider that learning a language is not only a matter of grammar, entonation and so on. We have to get close to the culture as much as possible, we think that our students need to feel that the English language is something more than a subject that they have to study at school.

It is important for them to encourage themselves and meet new people, make new friends… and they can do it by means of this activity. It started last term when we connected to an Irish school, St. David´s Holy Faith in Greystones. We talked to their Spanish Language Department and exposed our idea. They agreed and everything started.

First of all, we sent an informative letter to the parents telling what we intended to do and to have their permission to use the students´ school e-mail addresses.

Then we both asked our students to write some personal profiles which described themselves. To make things faster,we created a padlet to be able to upload these profiles and the videos we would make. (We are still making them…)

We want the Irish students to know our school, our village, all the fantastic things we have around here… and they will do the same to us.

Contacts have already started and we hope this activity will be useful to our students to improve their knowledge about the English language and culture and we expect they can make a lot of really good friends… And perhaps, one day they can even meet…

Who knows?…

Este curso hemos iniciado una nueva actividad en el Departamento de Lengua Inglesa. Consideramos que aprender un idioma es algo más que aprender su gramática o su entonación. Tenemos que intentar acercarnos a su cultura todo lo que podamos porque pensamos que nuestros alumnos necesitan sentir que el inglés es algo más que una asignatura para estudiar en clase.

Es importante para  ellos que se animen y conozcan a gente nueva y que hagan nuevos amigos… y creemos que lo pueden conseguir a través de esta actividad. Comenzó el trimestre pasado cuando nos pusimos en contacto con un colegio irlandés, St. David´s Holy Faith en Greystones. Les presentamos la idea y todo empezó.

Primero enviamos una carta informativa a los padres para decirles qué pretendíamos hacer y para pedirles permiso para que los niños utilizasen los correos del colegio.

A continuación los profesores les pedimos que redactasen un perfil personal de cada uno para que se diesen a conocer y, para hacer las cosas más rápidas y atractivas, creamos un padlet para subir esos perfiles y algunos vídeos que vamos a hacer sobre nuestros colegios y pueblos respectivos. ( Todavía los estamos haciendo…).

Los contactos ya han comenzado y esperamos que esta actividad les sea útil a nuestros alumnos para mejorar su conocimento de la lengua y cultura inglesa. También deseamos que hagan muchos amigos y quizás, algún día se conozcan… ¿Quién sabe?…
